2008 Agility Schedule at a Glance

PKC's next Agility Orientation will be held on July 14th at 6pm at the Fairgrounds!!

Who needs to attend the agility orientation?

  1. New trainees entering the agility program need to attend.
  2. If you want to sign up for Puppy 1, Puppy 2, or Introductory Agility the signup sheets will be available at orientation.
  3. If you don't know what class you should be in, you should come to orientation to find out.
  4. PKC members who are new to the agility program need to come to orientation.

What to bring to orientation? 

Your application (one for each dog) and payment for the session.

Agility classes will begin on July 28th at the fairgrounds.  Puppy Agility classes will continue to be held at the club.  If you have any questions or would like more information, please contact Linda, our Director of Agility.

Agility Instructor / Assistant Instructor Meeting

The next Instructors/Assistant meeting will be held in late August/early September.   Contact Linda with any questions.

Directions: Hwy 41 to Hwy 29 West. Right on County J. Go straight at the
first stop light. Turn right onto the first road past the stop light
(Preservation Way). The DNR building will be on your left.

Agility Classes

Puppy Agility 1
(Class size limited to 10 handler/dog teams)

Puppy 1 is for puppies 3-6 months old.  Puppies learn confidence working around, and on, some agility equipment including ground bars, table, tunnels, and the wobble board. Basic ground work is also introduced, including sit, down, and recalls.

Puppy Agility 2
(Class size limited to 10 handler/dog teams)

Fred on Dogwalk

Puppy 2 is for puppies 6-9 months old.  Puppies learn to jump short cavaletties and ground poles, are introduced to weave poles, the ladder, the short dog walk and a short A-frame among other things.  Basic ground work is continued and some agility handling skills are introduced.

Introductory Agility
(Class size is limited to 12 Big Dogs and 12 Small Dogs)

Intro is for for dogs 9 months old or older. This class is designed to introduce dogs and owners to the sport of agility. This class will develop a solid foundation for you and your dog by introducing equipment, exercises, and commands that will be used in all future agility classes. The class will start with your dogs on-leash but should quickly progress to off-leash work as soon as you and your dog are ready (as determined by the instructor). Off-leash control is required to move out of this class.

Beginners Agility

This class requires that you have successfully completed the Introductory Agility class or have tested out of that class. You'll further perfect your dog's skills on the equipment. Additionally, the Beginners class works on handler skills that you'll need to run an agility course including front crosses and rear crosses. It also introduces sequences, starting with 6-8 obstacles and progressing to 12-14 obstacles by the end of the class session.

Intermediate

This class requires that you have passed the Beginners Agility class or have tested out of that class. Intermediate agility prepares you to begin competing in your first agility trial. You'll work on longer sequences of obstacles and you'll continue to work on handling skills to improve the teamwork between you and your dog. You'll learn how to read a course map and how to analyze that course for the best run with you and your dog.

Novice/Open Agility

You and your dog should be competing in Novice or Open agility, or you should be planning to enter a trial within the next 6 months. This class will perfect your handling skills beyond what you learned in Intermediate Agility. You'll continue to work on longer sequences, full courses, and the handling techniques to make your run more efficient. You'll also work on obstacle discrimination and distance work with your dog.

Excellent Agility

To enter this class you and your dog should be competing in Excellent level classes at trials.  This class will allow you and your dog to work on some of the difficult challenges that we see more and more in the Excellent level classes.  This class will focus primarily on handling skills.
