Going to the Dogs

The week of April 15-18 found a group of 25 children at the Packerland Kennel Club for a program titled “Going To The Dogs”. The children came each day for an hour and a half to learn about dog breeds, canine careers, dog venues (agility, obedience and conformation), puppy care, dog safety, and  responsible dog ownership.  I have heard nothing but positive comments on their time with us. I want to thank Pat Grathen and Jim Schmidt who shortened their open floor times to accommodate our program and to those that helped clean up the building before the kids arrived, Karen Smith, Nancy Sawdo,  Mary Mankowski, and Marilyn Thyes.  These small acts are certainly noticed and appreciated!!!!!!!  A huge thank you to the following club members who took time out of their busy day, and even took time off from work, to share their dogs with the children.  THANK YOU!!!!!!

NEW UPDATED POLICY REGARDING OUTREACH VISITS

The Outreach Committee discovered at the Pet Expo this year that not all of our members maintain current rabies vaccinations for their dogs brought to meet the public for outreach programs under the Packerland Kennel Club name. This is a concern for us ethically, legally, and from an insurance liability standpoint.  While vaccinating your dog for rabies is an important aspect of responsible dog ownership, it is also the law in Wisconsin. “In order to comply with the provisions of Wisconsin Statutes [s.95.21 (2)] and Administrative Codes [S. ATACP  11.52], relating to the Statewide Rabies Control Program, the owner of any dog kept or exhibited in Wisconsin (other than a dog kept for educational or scientific purposes) shall have the dog vaccinated against rabies by a veterinarian at no later than 5 months of age and revaccinated within one year after the initial vaccination.”

Effective May 10, 2008, any dog, over the age of 5 months, that participates in any PKC Outreach Program will need to present a copy of a current rabies vaccination certificate (not a tag) to either Ronda or Faith prior to participating in the program.  This is a precautionary measure and will ensure that each dog representing Packerland Kennel Club has a current rabies vaccination in the event of an incident with the public.  You can bring a copy of the rabies certificate directly to the program/event in which you are participating or you can mail/e-mail Ronda a copy to keep on file.   These copies will be transported to every program/event so they are on-site while the dogs are present.  Unfortunately, if we do not have a copy of the dog’s current rabies certificate, your dog will not be allowed to participate.

Again, I do appreciate each human and canine that has participated in the Outreach programs in the past.  We have certainly done an outstanding job of promoting canines and the Packerland Kennel Club, and will continue to do so in the future.   If you have any questions please feel free to contact me.
